As described in the book On the Line: The Creation of A Chorus Line (by Robert Viagas, Baayork Lee, and Thommie Walsh, with the entire original cast), A Chorus Line emerged from a series of interview sessions with a group of dancers (accounts vary on the number—15 to 22) whose life stories became the dialogue and lyrics of the show. In an interview with BBC News in 2017, original cast member Donna McKechnie (Cassie) says that Michael Bennett asked “three essential questions: say your name, say where you were born, and why did you start dancing?”
We recently asked our cast, crew, and creative team three questions of our own: “How did you first encounter A Chorus Line?” “What does A Chorus Line mean to you?” and “What is your favorite moment, song, or lyric, from the show?”
